Double-Hung vs. Single-Hung Windows: Which Is Right for Florida?

Single-hung and double-hung windows look identical from the outside. The difference is mechanical: in a single-hung window, only the bottom sash moves; in a double-hung, both sashes are operable. It sounds like a minor distinction, but it affects ventilation, cleaning access, and cost in ways worth knowing before you choose.

How Each Works

Single-hung: The upper sash is fixed permanently in place. The lower sash slides up to open. To ventilate, you raise the lower sash. Air enters at the bottom opening — that's the only opening you can control.

Double-hung: Both sashes are operable independently. You can open just the top, just the bottom, or both simultaneously. Many double-hung windows also tilt inward for easy cleaning of both panes from inside — significant in a two-story home.

Ventilation Strategy in Florida

Double-hung windows allow a ventilation technique that single-hungs don't: opening both the top and bottom sash simultaneously creates a convective loop — cooler air enters at the bottom, warmer air exits at the top. On Florida's mild winter days and October/November evenings when you want fresh air without AC, this is noticeably more effective than bottom-only ventilation.

Cleaning Access

The tilt-in feature of most double-hung windows means you can clean the exterior glass from inside — both the upper and lower sash tilt inward for access. For ground-floor windows this is a minor convenience; for second-floor windows, it's a meaningful safety and practicality advantage.

Cost and Impact Rating

Double-hung windows cost slightly more than single-hung for equivalent size and performance. Both are equally available in impact-rated configurations. For most standard Florida residential applications, single-hung impact windows in good quality vinyl or aluminum are entirely appropriate — the double-hung option is worth the upgrade primarily if you specifically want the tilt-clean or the two-direction ventilation.
